Staying Safe in the Sunshine

9 July 2026
Staying Safe in the Sunshine

While it's lovely to enjoy the warm weather, it's important to stay safe in the heat. Here are some simple tips to help you keep cool:

🧴 Wear more suncream than you think you need

The sun is incredibly powerful, and sunburn can cause lasting skin damage, not to mention making you feel miserable!

💧 Drink, drink, and drink some more!

By the time you feel thirsty, you're already becoming dehydrated. Keep sipping water throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty.

🧢 Pop on a hat

A wide-brimmed hat helps keep you cool while protecting your face, neck and scalp from harmful UV rays.

❄️ Cool your pulse points

Place a cool flannel or wrapped ice pack on your wrists, neck or ankles, or simply run them under cold water. It helps cool your body quickly.

💦 Use a water mist

A quick spray with cool water can work wonders! As the water evaporates, it helps draw heat away from your skin.

👕 Dress for the weather

Choose loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing made from breathable fabrics like cotton or linen.

🚿 Skip overly cold showers

Have a tepid (lukewarm) shower. Shocking your system with ice-cold water restricts blood flow to your skin, actually trapping heat inside your core.

🌡️ Remember: Older adults, young children and people living with health conditions can be more vulnerable during hot weather. If you have elderly neighbours, friends or relatives, why not check in on them over the weekend? ❤️

Stay safe, stay hydrated, and enjoy the sunshine! ☀️💙
